Activity 5: Using social online networks in teaching or professional development Jay Johnson reflective model Descriptive Social media in our school setting is developing. We are at the stage where it is the equipment and the resourcing for te ao matihiko is perhaps an area we can strengthen. Though the children have most of their experiences with social media at home, it is a trend that is felt the world over. Facebook, Instagram are some platforms and apps that are key sites for information in a real time world. We recognise that in our school values we can identify the areas that we need to improve and these turn into goals for the teacher and student. 2.1 He tapu ngä reo katoa. Blurred personal and professional boundaries in electronic communication The critical incident , which triggered the ethical dilemma. I can remember unwinding with a few colleagues on a Friday evening. We decided to go to the local bar & restaurant, where consumption of alcohol was had, as well as a meal. One colleague without my knowledge decided to video record an event which was posted to Snapchat. Their Snapchat followers included children from our school. The video recording showed the consumption of alcohol, and showed myself being jovial. This was seen by the children, so they asked me the following Monday if I had enjoyed my evening. The video lasted 30 seconds and then it was deleted. 2. Various sometimes competing forces , each of which impacts on decision-making from its own particular bias My colleagues decision to post the video at the tim...

Reflection Journal (Part 3) The use of Jay, J.K. and Johnson, K.L. (2002) reflective model and Wenger-Trayner, E., & Wenger-Trayner, B. (2015) perspective of Communities of Practice have shaped what I have used in this blog. Descriptive: Activity 3: Inquiry Topic – Networking through different platforms by engaging 21 st century skills of collaboration. The Domain: The internet in general has provided the means to broaden our horizons, to communicate with distant relatives or business associates. It has enabled us to produce different platforms or learning models for people, who have access, to learn and discover different topics or trends of the time. It provides different modes of interaction from video, e-mail and social media. The internet has become one of the most powerful vehicles of knowledge and communication. So enhancing the skills associated with these avenues of networking will engage learning. The Community: My community of learning is made up of ...

Reflective Journal ( Activity 2 ) The ‘Gibbs Model for Reflection’ highlights a change in my teaching practice and its affects. The descriptive aspect identifies for me the way knowledge is conveyed to better enhance the learning development in the student and their capacity. This in a way makes a comparison between how I was taught and how the students are taught today. “ One of the biggest challenges for education in the 21st century is that our ideas about curriculum are currently underpinned by at least two quite different epistemologies , or models of what counts as knowledge.” Making way for innovative methods of learning has been at the forefront of my Mindlab journey. This in turn challenges me to incorporate a different kind of mindset in teaching but uses my prior knowledge as a foundation to strengthen that innovative process. I consider my prior learning as a huge part of my reflection, this helps me recognise skills I do have and at the same time skills...

Reflective Journal Taking into consideration the model provided by Jay & Johnson about my reflective practice. I have come to the realization, what I perceive as reflective practice, falls short of what I need to know and how to better enhance my understanding. The descriptive aspect of the model identifies that NCEA for me as a teacher of science and mathematics, has proven difficult with limited support and resources being taught in te reo Māori. I find at times it is overwhelming, but I feel I need to be more resilient, take it on the chin and spend the bulk of the time translating an English resource (which is in abundance) into te reo Maori. I also feel my understanding of the NCEA criteria for my subjects is also limited because I am the only teacher of those subjects. I know about the professional development and courses that support teachers in NCEA, but the point of difference is the amount of professionals teaching these subjects in te reo Māori. This I find troubleso...
