Activity 5: Using social online networks in teaching or professional development

Jay Johnson reflective model

Descriptive

Social media in our school setting is developing. We are at the stage where it is the equipment and the resourcing for te ao matihiko is perhaps an area we can strengthen. Though the children have most of their experiences with social media at home, it is a trend that is felt the world over. Facebook, Instagram are some platforms and apps that are key sites for information in a real time world.

We recognise that in our school values we can identify the areas that we need to improve and these turn into goals for the teacher and student.

2.1 He tapu ngä reo katoa. No reira, me whai koha te hunga o ngä Kura Kaupapa Mäori ki ngä reo katoa.

This means that learning different languages include language in mathematics and science. It also means in language in construction manuals. So subject rich language.

2.2 Mo ngä tamariki, kia rua ngä reo. Ko te reo o ngä matua tupuna tuatahi, ko te reo o tauiwi tuarua. Kia orite te pakari o ia reo, kia tu tangata ai ngä tamariki i roto i te ao Mäori, i roto hoki i te ao o Tauiwi.

That recognizing other avenues of innovation, incorporating one culture with another and making a new bond through innovation.

Social media also shows the trends of  the time or rather what other people portray as trends. This is relating to the overall network of your school, the community. How well up to date are you?

Comparative
Parents involvement so far is face to face discussions about the implementation, or their thoughts of a more ao matihiko orientated learning area. From years 7-8 English language is taught, but for the subjects like mathematics and science, those are done in te reo Maori.

This is a predicament and there is not enough resources for those subject in Maori. Hence the reason to start an innovation where lessons are being recorded, quality recordings of certain achievement standards being done. This would encourage understanding through social media as a learning tool

Critical Reflection
We can make some kind of change if we think forward and have a go at it approach. This type of attitude toward learning goes against what you have been taught but really reflects on your learning and what you need to up-skill, professional development wise.
